Before his end in 2005, Carson spoke about the direction he saw entertainment going. He had concerns. “Not long before he died, Johnny went to dinner with Garry Shandling and Jerry Seinfeld,” said filmmaker Peter Jones said in a documentary about the entertainer. “[Carson] apparently went on about his disappointment in the direction television was going, with its tabloid nature and reality garbage.” Had he lived to see the rise of shows like The Kardashians, and was still hosting The Tonight Show, one can imagine the monologues he would deliver today. That said, audiences can see Carson’s influence in talk show hosts like John Oliver and Jimmy Fallon. Through them, Johnny Carson lives on.
