Behind the Phoenix Legacy The Wallace and Ladmo Show

18. Work Was More Like Playtime

While Kwiatkowski took his job as a floor director seriously, sweeping and managing sets, they still had fun. He and Thomson hit it off. “We goofed around a lot,” said Kwiatkowski to Wallace Watchers. “Seems like there was all this comedy going on around the studio… After Bill got the cartoons and started the show, a few weeks later he asked me if I’d appear with him in front of the camera because I was behind the camera.” Kwiatkowski decided to take a shot at the entertainment side of the camera.

The two performers weren’t strangers to having fun. Prior to the cameras rolling on them, they’d wasted hours goofing around on the set. Thomson’s account of that first taping on Wallace Watchers is a hoot. “‘Lad, what are you looking for?’” Thomson asked his new partner. “And he says, ‘I dropped my Congressional Medal of Honor.’ And I said, ‘Well, where’d you lose it?’ He says, ‘Out in the hallway.’ And I said, ‘Well, why are you looking in here?’ And he says, ‘Well, the light’s a lot better in here.’ Beneath the surface of Kwiatkowski’s calm demeanor, he was freaking out.
