There Are 25 Secrets About Bewitched You Never Knew

20. York Out

Producers and the show never bothered to explain why York left. It worked out in the end, but York had good reason to leave. In the late ’50s, he was in a film called “They Came to Cordura.” During the filming of that movie, he tore a bunch of muscles in his back. Doctors prescribed the usual, pain medication. In the long run, the regimen of pills and pain was too much. As is often the case, York found himself addicted to those meds in later years. He left the show before it affected his performance.

19. The New Dick

Behind the scenes, York’s exit was nothing short of dramatic. One day, during season five, York stepped out to visit a doctor during a lunch break. The doctor gave him some B-12 and York returned to set. The B-12 caused a crazy reaction, giving York a seizure on set. They rushed him to the hospital, and to everyone’s surprise, he did not return. York survived the seizure, but his job on Bewitched did not. For a few episodes, there was no Darrin, but then Sargent slid into the role.
