Yes You Did Do That: 25 Reveals About “Family Matters”

20. The Real Steve Urkel

Few people know that there was a real person named Steve Urkel, but spelled with an “E,” as in Steve Erkel. One of the show’s co-creators, Michael Warren, hatched the goofy name based on his real-life pal. Little did he know how popular the character would become or how much the popularity would torment his real-life friend. For years, Steve Erkel suffered prank phone calls and other forms of harassment. The man grew accustomed to hearing Urkel’s famous line, “Did I do that?” shouted into his ears.

19. Pants Problem

One problem with Steve Urkel nobody could have imagined was a matter of his, ahem, pants. They were, well… too tight. When they hired White he was yet a boy, but as he grew, so did his body, despite the costumer’s best efforts to hide that, ahem… growth. The network had concerns with one part of his body growing in particular. “I was getting network notes on the bulge,” said White to Vanity Fair cryptically. “I wore my pants so freaking tight and it was like, after a while, we got a problem there…” They decided to loosen up Urkel’s pants to solve the problem.
