16. Željava Air Base: Bosnia
Because it’s always good to have a place to stash one’s MIG fighter jets, the Russian standard for warplanes, the Russians built Zeljava Air Base to do just that. That was its main function during the Serbian-Bosnian-Herzegovina War. While the place has served many purposes since its inception, officials officially closed it in the 1990s. Several conflicts in that region have left the base somewhat damaged but still standing. There are so many active landmines on the property, it serves as the perfect place to train landmine detection dogs.
