9. Carlstrom Field: Florida
Like many of these places, the government erected this structure during The Great War. In this case, it was to serve as an advance pilot school for the Army. When that war ended, they closed the facility, then brought it back into use for World War Two. The Army trained the 53d Flying Training Detachment there. They also built a new facility where the U.S. trained the Royal Air Force (RAF). After the war, they turned the site in the G. Pierce Wood Memorial Hospital, a psychiatric hospital.
