Despite its military history, Guam is actually a tropical paradise. Guam’s coastal regions house a variety of resorts that attract tourists from all over the world. Tourism has actually helped stabilize Guam’s economy over the last couple of decades. Visitors return to Guam raving about its rich ecology and satisfying cuisine.

Recently, Guam has been identified as a potential U.S. target for North Korean attacks. There is also a considerable effort underway to help the territory establish a richer education system and gain more representation in U.S. politics.

Puerto Rico

Recent natural disasters have thrust Puerto Rico into the spotlight of U.S. media. Hurricane Maria left most of the island without power for months. Hundreds of thousands are believed to have evacuated the territory as a result of the damage.

Even before that disaster, Puerto Rico has been on the minds of millions of Americans. That’s especially true of American politicians who have battled over the possibility of Puerto Rico’s becoming a U.S. state. Supporters claim that colonialism is an outdated and dangerous concept. Pundits believe that it is in the disinterest of both sides.
