War and Paradise: The Territories Of The U.S.

Serranilla Bank

The Serranilla Bank shares an oddly close history with the Bajo Nuevo Bank.

Both banks were originally disputed territory between Columbia and Jamaica. They were also both claimed by the United States as part of the Guano Act. Each was supposed to be abandoned by the U.S., but technicalities kept the regions under their control.

Actually, those same technicalities seemingly keep the area under U.S. control. The United States considers the area to be unorganized and uninhabited, but have not relinquished control of it.

Despite its relative worthlessness, Columbia, Honduras, and the United States are locked in a disagreement over whose territory it actually is. Columbia was supposed to renounce its claim as part of an agreement, but it has yet to do so to this day.
