8. Death of Burnette
When Smiley Burnette passed away, there were still three seasons left on the show. To fill in the hole and keep the show going, Rufe Davis’ character Floyd Smoot took over the duties of the engineer, while remaining as the conductor. Logically, since the line had disconnected from the network, there would have been no other options.
