8. Measles Under House Arrest
While under house arrest, the daughters all contracted measles. The grand duchess shaved their heads in light of the outbreak. Despite this, one can see in this image that they are nothing but smiles, bald, but happy despite the mounting stress of the situation. It’s a long cry from the image taken of them on the French sofa the year prior. At the time, they did not know what would come for them in time. They believed they were under the protection of the interim government, that they would eventually earn their freedom and integrate back into society a few rungs down on the social ladder.
