When a writer picks an unusual name for a character, they get the chance to own the name for all time (I.e. Hester Prynne in Nathanial Hawthorne’s Scarlett Letter), but they also run the risk of bumping readers with a weird spelling. This was the case with Hermione. Fans kept writing J.K. Rowling about the pronunciation. She used the film to teach everyone how to pronounce her name when Hermione teaches Viktor Krum in Goblet of Fire.
