The Rifleman: Secrets Behind the Scenes of One of the Most Popular Westerns on TV

Not What It Appears

The Rifleman was set in the small town of North Fork in the New Mexico Territory. However, that’s not where the show was actually filmed. Instead, it was shot in Los Angeles using tried and true Hollywood magic. By that, I mean the use of elaborate backdrops and sets that were built to represent buildings and structures of that time period. There were numerous locations such as Calabasas, Chatsworth, Malibu Creek State Park, and Iverson Ranch just to name a few. Another main location where a great majority of the show as filmed was at the Paramount Ranch located in the Santa Monica Mountains.
