3. Black Community Reaction

Reactions from the community have varied somewhat. For many black Americans, the pain of the past still haunts them. A project like this, which seeks to restore the past, brings feelings and concern. “I find that some people are receptive to the message and others are resistant,” says White of the community. “But our message is that we want the underserved communities, and communities of color to be partners with us. Anecdotally, we have seen an uptick in African Americans visiting Monticello so I know we’re making progress.”
