4. Slavery and Freedom in America

Despite its tarnished history, Monticello has become a place of healing in some ways. In 2016, the National Endowment for the Humanities along with the University of Virginia hosted a summit with Monticello. The event, Memory, Mourning, Mobilization: Legacies of Slavery and Freedom in America, drew activists and academics together with Monticello’s descendants to talk about the role of slavery in America. For many, talking is one of the simplest, most effective means of healing.
