For the creation of the show, the creators and producers of Felicity reached out to real-life college students to formulate the writing to successfully portray college students. Specifically, they reached out to students at the University of California in Los Angeles, talking to them about their experiences.

They kept it real, including the students’ real-life stories of hair cutting, feeling ugly, and being promiscuous without any feelings involved. Even though the content was true-to-life, later, J.J. Abrams admitted that this didn’t make for the best viewing. Other episodes took the show in a completely different direction after the ratings fell.
