In Land Speed Racing the only way to get an official world record is to make a total of two runs, in opposite directions within one hour and then your average speed is the record. Thompson had issues with the car so he was unable to make a return run to solidify the official world record. But that didn’t matter, press at the event had already got word out to the rest of the country and Thompson was a superstar overnight.
