12. Not the First Choice

Spielberg had something very specific in mind for the role of “Quint,” the rough around the edges fisherman. He even had specific actors in mind that he wanted to play the part. But after he approached both Sterling Hayden and Lee Marvin and they each turned him down, Spielberg had to resort to other options. That’s when Jaws producers Brown and Zanuck stepped in and recommended an English actor by the name of Robert Shaw. They felt he would be perfect for the part of the salty sea-dog based on the time they spent working with him on the film The Sting back in 1973.
