More times than not, everything that happens in a movie is meticulously scripted. But every so often there are a few improv moments that make it to the big screen. One of those moments in Jaws was actually inspired by something that happened off screen. The scene where Brody is sitting at the dinner table with his family and his son mimics his father’s movements for example. That actually happened off screen between Jay Mello, the child actor that played the son, and Schieder. Spielberg happened to see this take place and he liked it so much that he recreated it and put it in the film.

You may remember the story told by Quint regarding his time spent on the U.S.S. Indianapolis. It was definitely a memorable moment in the film. But it turns out that it wasn’t part of the original script, nor was it part of the book. Instead, it showed up in an uncredited rewrite of the script by the playwright, Howard Sackler. Writer-director John Milius later expanded upon the idea and turned it into a multi-page monologue. When it came time to shoot the scene, Robert Shaw ended up sprucing it up a bit seeing as how he was also a playwright and understood the process.
