12. Not the First Choice
Spielberg had something very specific in mind for the role of “Quint,” the rough around the edges fisherman. He even had specific actors in mind that he wanted to play the part. But after he approached both Sterling Hayden and Lee Marvin and they each turned him down, Spielberg had to resort to other options. That’s when Jaws producers Brown and Zanuck stepped in and recommended an English actor by the name of Robert Shaw. They felt he would be perfect for the part of the salty sea-dog based on the time they spent working with him on the film The Sting back in 1973.
11. Not Everything Was By The Book
If you’ve seen the film as well as read the book, you already know there were quite a few differences between the story lines of each. Which is to be expected in some cases, and there’s obviously no question that Spielberg knows what he’s doing. But even still, I can’t help but wonder what it would’ve been like had he followed the book more closely. For example, in the book, Chief Brody’s wife actually had an affair with the character of Hooper. That surely would’ve spiced it up a few notches. Another prime example of something in the book that never made it to the big screen was that Mayor Vaughn wasn’t under pressure from local business owners to keep the beaches open. Instead, it was pressure from local members of the Mafia.
