20. The 60 Minutes Interview
In 1977, Carson appeared on the show 60 Minutes, in a tell-all interview. He admitted to his drinking problems at the time, joking, “I don’t handle alcohol well at all, no. Really don’t,” said Carson. When asked if he and his co-host, Ed McMahon were drinking pals, he replied, “Oh, Ed and I have had some wonderful times in the past.” Considering he didn’t receive his DUI for another five years, it seems those “wonderful times in the past” didn’t end there.
19. Joanne Copeland: Wife #2
After Carson’s first marriage, he met Joanne Copeland. She’d been a flight attendant on Pan American Airways prior their marriage. At the time, Carson wasn’t yet the super-famous Johnny Carson. He was hosting a small time game show, Who Do You Trust? The couple remained married for almost a decade, nine years by the end. People close to them during their marriage were not surprised when the marriage failed. Despite Copeland’s support of Johnny’s career, she was so unhappy she eventually cheated on Carson.
