Here’s Johnny: Everything About the Tonight Show’s 30 Year Host Johnny Carson

6. Johnny’s Apology to Mr. Rogers

One of the funniest bits on Carson was when he spoofed the Mr. Rogers Show. Whereas the real-life Fred Rogers was a kind and empathetic man, the version created by Carson was an evil version. He told his fictitious child audience to steal from their parents and send the money to him. Fred Rogers, no surprise, was not entertained. Having no reason to beef with Rogers, Carson eventually apologized to him over the bit, citing that it was distasteful. It begs the question, though… did anyone believe kids were up watching The Tonight Show, suffering confusion over their pal Rogers?
