7. Carson’s Catchphrase
Made famous by Ed McMahon, the catchphrase for The Tonight Show during Carson’s reign was “Here’s Johnny!” It was Carson’s introduction before the monologue. The phrase has popped up in many places in pop culture with no issues, but when a portable toilet company tried to use it, as in the Here’s Johnny portable toilet, Carson sued the manufacturer. The suit cited that Carson had a right of publicity for the phrase. A U.S. District Court in the Eastern District of Michigan agreed with Johnny. They forced the company to drop the usage, a legal matter they continued to fight for decades.
