3. The Sea Is Not Lawless
Passengers often ask to which countries laws must a boat adhere? The law of the sea is maritime law, a system of international law designed to govern the ocean. Two cruise ship passengers, Isabelle Lagacé and Melina Roberge (pictured), from Canada, learned this firsthand when they tried to smuggle 200 pounds of cocaine into Australia via a lovely cruise. They figured, who will know? Um, the customs officials when you arrive, silly. The pair may face 20 years in prison. The street value of their coke was around $23-million. Dumb.
