23. Knotts Served
During his career as an actor, Knotts would reprise the role of the man in a uniform more than once. It wasn’t only a role for him. At age 19, Knotts enlisted in the U.S. Army as a reserve. He served as a technician during World War II, from June 21, 1943, to January 6, 1946. Most of his actual time in the service, however, he entertained troops in GI variety shows.
22. He Made Corporal
When the U.S. Army discharged Knotts in 1946, he’d achieved the rank of Technician Grade 5. It’s the equivalent of a Corporal, demanding others in an official capacity address him as such. Some refer to the rank as “Tech Corporal” to clarify the distinction, but the pay and respect are the same. In the armed forces, Corporals are noncommissioned officers.
21. More Awards
Knotts award-winning spirit didn’t start with his time in Hollywood. While he served in the U.S. Army, he also won a few awards: the World War II Victory Medal, Philippine Liberation Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal (with four bronze service stars), Army Good Conduct Medal, Marksman Badge (with Carbine Bar) and Honorable Service Lapel Pin.
