10. From Cop to Reluctant Astronaut
Playing the title character, Roy Fleming, Don Knotts starred in The Reluctant Astronaut in 1967. In the story, Fleming’s father submits his son to NASA as an applicant. They hire him, forcing Roy Fleming to become astronaut WB-1074. Comedy ensues, bug-eyes and all. Space may be huge, but planet Earth is a small place. One actor in the movie, Paul Hartman, later made it to Knotts’ old stomp, Mayberry, as one of The Andy Griffith Show cast members.
