3. About That Crawl

As mentioned, the crawl for the intro of Star Wars was one of the hardest shots they had to film. No actors were in the shot. There was no set pieces, only the crawl. Today they would make it in post-production, a digital crawl, something an intern could complete. In the ‘70s, it took the best crew members and many takes. Using a camera guided on a wire over a hard copy of the crawl, they shot as many takes as it took to get the speed and steadiness of the shot perfect. Then, they reshot for German, Spanish, and French versions of the film.
