7. 2000 Lead on the Teens

When the teens never turned up, authorities suggested that they’d run off to be together. The problem was none of their friends could corroborate that theory. Neither teen had spoken of such a plan. Adding salt to the wound, the authorities lost the files on the case. Then, in 2000, after an episode of Missing Persons aired on MSNBC, someone claimed to have information. The tip cited a witness who watched the young couple jump in a lake to cool off. By that account, they drowned, but authorities could find no evidence to support this claim. The case remains open.
