Behind the 50 Year Evolution of the James Bond Franchise

18. Shirley Eaton

Honor Blackman, the woman who played the character Pussy Galore, was to be the female focal point of Goldfinger. But, at the time, the world fetishized Shirley Eaton instead. It’s like nobody had ever seen a beautiful woman painted in gold before. She even made the cover of Life magazine. It wasn’t long after Goldfinger came out that she hung up her gold paint and went full-mom. Eaton had two sons who she felt deserved more of her attention.

17. Honor Blackman

Forever typecast as a “Bond Girl,” Honor Blackman had her reservations about the title. “Stop calling us Bond girls,” she told Daily Mail in 2015, “We are women and actresses!” Hollywood in the 1960s was even more objectifying than today’s Hollywood, but it’s not much better. The most talked about facet of Blackman’s performance is often how well she played her role at her age. At the risk of succumbing to the same sort of reporting, before Monica Bellucci played a “Bond girl,” Blackman held the title for the oldest. Blackman’s right. Roger Moore was 46 when he first played Bond, 57 by the last films, but nobody obsesses over it.
