15. The Original Marty McFly
Robert Zemeckis’ first pick for the role of Marty was Michael J. Fox. The problem was, Fox’s dance card was already full playing Alex P. Keaton on the series “Family Ties.” Eric Stoltz had performed with flying colors in the movie, “Mask,” so Zemeckis gave Stoltz a shot, but immediately regretted it. Stoltz wasn’t the right for the role. Zemeckis worked with Fox and the studio to shuttle Michael from the set of “Family Ties” to the BTTF set at the end of every day. He would sleep in the car, and then film from six at night until six in the morning, returning to the “Family Ties” set. They had to reshoot scenes already filmed with Stoltz, but it was worth it in the end.
