14. Violence
Murder aside, both Capone and Montana were violent characters. When bribing officials failed Capone, he had no recourse but to inflict more violence on Chicago. Tony Montana’s violence and the violence of the film was a difficult hurdle for De Palma to cross. The rating board wanted to rate the movie with an “X,” a rating normally only given to pornographic movies. De Palma felt the violence was educational and brought in law enforcement agents to back him up. The board actually conceded the point.
