The Adventures of Superman; The TV Series You Never Knew

18. Kent’s Glasses Were Fakes at First

When George Reeves first played the role of Clark Kent, he donned the stereotypical geeky glasses. That signified that he was weak. Reeves, actually had superb vision so he wore glasses without lenses. It’s easy to notice in early episodes as there is no reflection from the studio lights in his glasses. However, Reeves was 38 when he started playing the role. By the time the series went off the air, Reeves was wearing actual prescription glasses. That’s why, in later episodes, we see a reflection in his nerd specs.

17. Drinking on the Set Was a Problem

Read enough about Hollywood back in the golden era, and one gets the sense there was a bar in every studio. There may have been. The woman who played Lois in the first season, Phyllis Coates, quit her role due to the proliferation of booze on the set. Her official story was that she didn’t want Hollywood to typecast her, but she admitted that the drinking made her uncomfortable. Reeves, in particular, was a drinker. Coming from a family with drinking problems, it made her uncomfortable so she did not renew her contract for season two.
