7. The Cast was Full of Commies
That was gross mischaracterization and I feel bad about it. Sorry. When the House Un-American Activities Committee [HUAC; A.K.A. McCarthyism] set about to root communism from the halls and studios of Hollywood, many actors and other Hollywood folks landed on a blacklist. It was bad for one’s career and life if the HUAC even questioned you. Robert Shayne, who played Inspector Bill Henderson, landed on one of those lists. He frequently missed episodes sitting in HUAC grilling sessions. In the long run, Shayne cleared his name and resumed a regular production schedule.
