3. The Dixmude
This ship belongs to the French Navy, and it’s an absolute powerhouse. It can carry 30 helicopters more than usual carriers, as well as a tank. It’s an amphibious assault carrier, and is the third ship in the French Navy to bear the name ‘Dixmude’. It cost around $600 million to build, and launched from Toulon.
4. SAS Mendi
The SAS Mendi belongs to the South African Navy, and was launched from Simonstown in 2003. It’s not a crazy-fast ship, clocking in at just 30 knots (34 mph), but it does weigh 3500 tonnes. Speed isn’t necessarily an issue, though. The ship’s a warmachine packed with an arsenal of firepower, including different weapon launchers and machine guns. It’s also equipped with an innovative radar system. Nobody’ll be messing with South Africa any time soon!
5. HMAS Canberra
Australia’s HMAS Canberra is an enormous carrier that can host over a hundred vehicles at once, 1,000 troops, or almost twenty helicopters. This ship was launched in 2011, sailing under the motto: “for queen and country”. It’s one of two ships of its kind in the world.
