In light of the fact that the soap opera General Hospital first aired on April 1, 1963, it surprises many viewers to learn that it is not the longest running show on TV. That distinction goes to two shows in the UK. When General Hospital first aired on ABC, it was one of two soaps on the network. The first didn’t last the year, but General Hospital had untold staying power. They could have never imagined it would still air over fifty years later. During that time, the venerable soap has run some 13,000 episodes and has won more Emmy Awards than any of its daytime rivals.
