4. The Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB)
Television as audiences know it today would not be the same without this organization, and yet many have no idea it exists. Created in 1967 by an act of the U.S. Congress, the CPB operates by way of public funding to promote and support public broadcasting. The mission of the CPB has been to ensure that every American has access to non-commercial, quality content. To do so, somewhere around 70 percent of the CPB budget funnels into some 1,500 local radio and television stations in the U.S. Today’s CPB also collects donations and grants to fund hundreds of millions of dollars in support.
