14. Benjamin Guggenheim

A man, not so wealthy as Astor, but perhaps classier, Ben Guggenheim was also on board. Guggenheim traveled with his valet, Victor Giglio. When the ship hit the iceberg and he found out there weren’t enough spots for everyone on the boats, Guggenheim and Giglio changed into their tuxedos. “We’ve dressed up in our best,” said Guggenheim, “and are prepared to go down like gentlemen.” Then they poured themselves a snifter of brandy and lit cigars.
