15. John Jason Astor IV

A number of wealthy people bought tickets to ride on RMS Titanic. Many of them did not make it onboard, either because they never intended to go or because something else came up. One man, John Jacob Astor IV boarded with a net value of $85-million. For perspective, that would be about $2-billion in today’s money. A legend exists surrounding Astor’s last hours as he did not make it off the ship. When Titanic struck the iceberg, he reportedly said to his waiter, “I asked for ice, but this is ridiculous.”
