A former Merchant Navy officer in the British Army, Captain Edward John Smith served White Star Line for years before becoming captain of Titanic. He knew the risks. “Well boys, you’ve done your duty and done it well,” he told his crew after all hope was lost. “I ask no more of you. I release you. You know the rule of the sea. It’s every man for himself now, and God bless you.” As such, Smith rode next to First Officer Murdoch.
