Casting Skipper was the hardest
The creator of the show, Sherwood Schwartz, had the hardest time finding the right mixture for the Skipper. He needed to be two things, not often found in one person: commanding and affectionate. When they auditioned Alan Hale Jr., that was it. They had their guy. Thankfully, Hale accepted.
