Mercury was a sister company to Ford, so it was common for models under each brand to share the same materials used, just applied in different ways. The Mercury Comet debuted in 1960 and used the same platform as the Ford Falcon during its first generation. It was when the second generation came out in 1964-1965 that the Comet first started earning the reputation as a muscle car when you could opt for the 427 cubic inch motor. Like other Mercury models at the time, the high-performance models went under the name Cyclone. Other trim levels included the Caliente, 404 and 202 being the base model.
