The Cougar was Mercury’s first attempt at a muscle car when it was released in 1967. It was designed to fit in the category right between the Ford Mustang and Ford Thunderbolt and according to some enthusiasts was considered the “sister car” of the beloved Mustang. Power options were fairly broad, if you happen to be buying one for your grandma, you had the 289 cubic inch Ford V8 producing just 200hp. But you also had the option of the 390 cubic inch V8 with a four barrel carb that produced an estimated 335hp, if you were wanting to do a little street racing on the side.
