15. Backlash
Prohibition did not move society up on the civilization scale as the Prohibitionists had hoped. In fact, one interesting backlash was the increased imbibing of women. Prior to the ban, it was unladylike to consume liquor. Once booze went underground, all bets were off. Speakeasies not only drew people of different cultures into one space, they crossed gender lines. A customer was a customer as far as speakeasy owners cared. To the drinkers, it was the more the merrier. On a sad note, by the 1930s more women had become alcoholics than before the ’20s.
