25 Images That Perfectly Capture the People and Events of Prohibition

16. The Stork Club

In time, the Stork Club became a legit place to drink, a waterhole for many famous names, but it started as a speakeasy. On 58th Street in Manhattan, in 1929, Sherman Billingsley opened his little speakeasy. Billingsley had been a bootlegger so he had the connections to keep the booze flowing. In 1931, prohibitionist agents raided The Stork Club, forcing Billingsley to move the club to East 51st Street, then 53rd after that. When the 21st Amendment ended Prohibition in 1933, The Stork Club went legit, entertaining people like Frank Sinatra, Lucille Ball, Desi Arnaz, and Grace Kelly. It stayed open until 1965.
