Originally, Richard Boone, an actor who lived Hawaii while Hawaii Five-O was first being created, was intended to play the role of McGarrett. He didn’t accept the role. He probably regretted that later on in his career when the show became a huge hit.

According to the scriptwriters, before McGarret became the leader of Five-O, he was an intelligence officer in the Navy. This probably partially had to do with Jack Lord’s own status as a veteran. McGarrett’s time as an intelligence officer definitely gave him the skills he needed to lead and solve crime effectively.
