Bonanza was the first “dramatic” Western on TV that didn’t primarily focus on hunting down and killing bad guys. The writers of the show chose to go deeper, focusing each episode on one social issue. Issues such as racism, prejudice, sexism, disabilities, and social justice were addressed during each episode. It was a huge risk, but it totally paid off.
