Shunning Is Real
Break the rules of society outside of Amish territory, and you might get beat up or imprisoned, depending on what rule you broke. Break the rules of Amishland and they may excommunicate you. They call it “Meidung,” meaning banishment. To get back you will have to beg, but that may not work. They may only take you back after you die, when they bury you on Amish land.
