In the movie, Gump runs across the United States. The run that inspired this moment came from a real 16-year-old boy, Louis Michael Figueroa, who ran from New Jersey to San Francisco in 1982. Gump speaks a line in the movie, which is an actual quote from the boy: “I just put one foot in front of the other. When I get tired I sleep. When I get hungry I eat. When I have to go to the bathroom, I go.”
