14. Johnston Atoll: North Pacific Ocean
Between the Marshall Islands and the Hawaiian Islands, an atoll rises from the Pacific ocean, given to the U.S. Navy in 1934 by President Franklin D. Roosevelt. Using dredge and fill equipment, the military expanded the larger island of the four, Johnston, increasing it to 596 acres from the original 46 acres. President Roosevelt designated the site a bird sanctuary, which makes one wonder why the U.S. dumped so much agent orange on the place. Now it’s too environmentally contaminated for human inhabitants.
