Television in the 1950’s was quite a bit different than it is today. Single parents raising their children nowadays is about as common as Saturday morning cartoons. However, during the filming of The Rifleman, it was somewhat of a taboo subject. The fact that Lucas McCain was the first widowed parent to be portrayed as raising a child alone is part of what made the show so groundbreaking.
