This particular example of the 1939 BMW 328 Touring Coupe happens to be the first car to win the original version of the Mille Miglia as well as the contemporary competition in 2004. It features one of the most unique versions of the classic kidney shaped grille that is normally associated with BMW’s. Long and skinny versus the shorter, wider grills we are used to seeing.
The original model was fitted with a straight sic-cylinder engine that produced roughly 80hp although the model shown here had definitely been modernized to some degree and therefore puts out significantly more. To win the Mille Miglia was a major achievement for both the drivers and the cars themselves. The thousand mile open-road endurance race pushed cars to the limits and reliability was just as important as having a fast car. In this video we see this 1939 328 make a run up the hill at the Goodwood Festival of Speed.
